ABOUT LUZ ESCAMILLA 

Utah State Senator, District 1 — Salt Lake City, West Valley City

Moving from Mexico to the United States in 1996, Luz finished high school in San Diego before moving to Utah to attend the University of Utah. At the U, she earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Business Marketing. 

After serving an internship during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, Luz began her marketing career at Pioneer Valley Hospital followed by Interpreting Solutions. In 2002, she entered the nonprofit sector working as State Diversity Outreach Director for the Utah Domestic Violence Council. From there, Luz began focusing on policy as the Multicultural Health Policy Analyst for the Disability Law Center and Utah Issues. 

Luz entered state government as the Director of Policy and Research for the State Office of Ethnic Affairs. In 2005, Luz earned her Master’s in Public Administration and was appointed by republican Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. as the Director of the State Office of Ethnic Affairs. 

After this public service role, Luz began a 13-year career with Zions Bank. From 2007 to 2020, she served as Director of Zions Bank’s Business Resource Center, Vice-President - Hispanic/Latino Market Manager, and Vice-President - Community Development Group. During those 13 years, Luz’s work with Zions Bank was focused on developing small and local businesses that empower underserved communities. 

In the summer of 2020, Luz left Zions to become a partner and Chief Operations Officer (COO) with MiCARE Network, a Utah-based tech startup in the healthcare industry. MiCARE is a medical care management company focusing on the medical outcomes of patients including the payment of health care expenses while they await the settlement of their legal cases. In her role as COO, Luz is responsible for the daily operations of MiCARE as they grow and develop their burgeoning business.

 

In 2008, Luz was elected to her first of three terms to the Utah State Senate, which represents the westside of Salt Lake City and part of West Valley City. Luz has worked tirelessly to pass meaningful legislation around issues of clean air, healthcare, public education, after school programs, and many other issues that improve the lives of working families and all residents of Utah. 

 

Luz has been an effective Democrat in the GOP-controlled legislature because of her ability to find effective solutions, find common ground, and build bridges among those with different interests. Along the way, she has upheld the values and principles that make Utah great.
